Appearance: Johan is about five feet nine inches tall, slender but with muscles that show if he wears the right outfit, with turquoise blue hair that comes down to his neck and is somewhat layered and frames his face. He has one lock of hair that comes down right between his eyes. Speaking of his eyes, they're are a few shades lighter than his hair and are usually wide open and full of life and eagerness. He usually wears a blue sleeveless jacket/vest with a puffy-sleeved white shirt and dark blue pants, as well as white shoes. In canon, this is a modified form of the Obelisk Blue uniform. In his universe, that is the usual outfit of a high-ranking slave duelist. On formal occasions, such as duels, he wears a much different outfit, which is what he actually appearas in Econtra wearing.

This outfit as a whole is mostly made of some form of leather. He wears a black sleeveless high-necked undershirt against his body, and over that he wears a purple-blue jacket-coat that goes down to nearly his ankles. At his hips, the coat flares out into two layers, one of which is the one that goes to his ankles, while the upper layer only goes to his knees. This jacket-coat is held on by two large buckles over his chest and a smaller black one between his waist and hips. There is a white belt around his waist and a black bracer on each of his arms that extends from his wrists to just shy of his elbows. On each arm, about midway between his shoulder and elbow, he wears a buckle. He wears black pants that have two buckled straps between his hips and his knees, two on each leg. He wears black boots to come up to just below his knees, and around his lower legs/the boots, from also just below his knees, are light purple wrappings.

Personality: First and foremost, no matter the world, Johan Anderson is the living, breathing incarnation of Yuuki Juudai's good sense. Whenever Juudai's enthusiasm or emotions get the better of him, Johan is there to calm him down and help him to deal with the situation in a more intelligent fashion. In general, Johan is a passionate, devoted, and caring person. His life goal is to be able to bridge the gap between the spirits of Duel Monsters and humans, and has been since shortly after he learned he really could speak to the spirits. He wants to be a hero, and if the choice came down to giving up his life for the greatest good, for the people he cares about, even if it meant enormous pain and suffering, and just dying painlessly but not saving anyone, he would gladly choose to help those he cared about, regardless of what it cost him. He has some strategic skills, and can be quite angered when innocents are harmed for any reason whatsoever. He also has a teasing streak in him now and then, and a good sense of humor. He's not above the occasional prank, so long as it wouldn't hurt anyone and would actually make them laugh.

Abilities/Strengths: Johan has the ability to see and communicate with Duel Monster spirits and has had it since his earliest childhood. This gift is quite powerful in him, as he can see and speak with not just his own, but others as well. He is an accomplished duelist, skilled beyond his years. He is a true and loyal friend, seldom giving up in anyone, especially Juudai.

Notable Posssessions: His Duel Disk and his dueling deck (including the Gem Beast cards, with attendant spirits). His deck has three cards that OU!Johan does not: the Crystal Kittens, offspring of Amethyst Cat and Topaz Tiger.

Weaknesses: Because Johan lost his family at such a young age, he can be insecure sometimes. Part of his loyalty to his friends is because he doesn't want anyone to be left alone the way that he was, and this manifests as both a weakness and a strength. This can sometimes lead to rash decisions, even if they're made rightly, that can have drastic consequences for himself or others. If harm is brought to his friends or to his Duel Monster spirits (or to any Duel spirits at all, really) he will be absolutely furious and his ability to think clearly could be enhanced or impaired, depending on just what is going on and what else is done. Juudai, any Juudai, is also his greatest weakness, because of the great friendship they share.

History: Johan Anderson was born to unknown parents in a world that combined what we would consider modern technology and magic in some ways. An unknown plague raced through the town he was born in when he was about four years old and killed both of his parents, leaving him an orphan. With many other children rendered into the same condition, he was taken to an orphanage and lived there for ten years. During those ten years, he developed a talent for the card game Duel Monsters, which is the greatest craze in that world, and he also learned that he could see and speak with the spirits of Duel Monsters. He eventually conceived the desire to become a noble duelist, in order to achieve his real purpose: becoming a bridge between the two worlds of humans and monster spirits.

In that society, two classes of duelists exist, the nobles and the slaves. Though called "slaves" and legally owned, the slaves are traditionally not mistreated and can own property and marry whom they wish. Slave duelists are, in general, considered more entertainment than people of actual important. This may be considered analogous to high school sports teams as opposed to professional ones. While the high school teams may be well regarded and have many fans, the professional ones are the ones with the huge paychecks and whom people listen to seriously. It's not a perfect example, though.

Slave duelists can become noble duelists by a series of duels. A certain proportion of those duels have to be won, while of those lost, they have to perform at a consistently high level of skill. In general, a slave duelist must win or perform highly for two hundred to two hundred and fifty duels to be freed and knighted. After that, they can enter the noble circuit, also known as the Pro Leagues. In general, it can take about three years for this to happen.

Of course, as with any system, there is always the chance of corruption. Johan was spared that when he was purchased by the King as a gift for the King's son, Juudai. From the moment Juudai and Johan met one another, they clicked instantly as friends, feeling as if they'd known one another all of their lives. Neither of them ever considered each other 'master' or 'slave' because of this. Juudai sponsered and supported Johan over three years of dueling, in the hopes that Johan would achieve his knighthood. Juudai also shared the ability to hear and see Duel Spirits, and had a guardian who was one: Yubel. Johan always showed her respect and courtesy, accepting her devotion to Juudai, and while they are not friends, Yubel will tolerate him being close to Juudai, if only because that's what Juudai wants.

Six months after they met for the first time, Johan won his fifteth duel, defeating a young man named Timothy who was being sponsered by the head of the company that had recreated and brought Duel Monsters into the world, Industrial Illusions. This head was Pegasus J. Crawford, and during the party that celebrated Johan's victory, he introduced Johan to a new group of cards: the Gem Beasts. According to Pegasus, they chose their own master, and they had chosen him. Johan was uncertain, until his touch unsealed the cards, and their spirits appeared to him, accepting him as part of them.

With these cards, Johan built his Gem Beast deck, and though it took him some time to really get to know the cards and be good with them, his wins piled up more and more. He wasn't perfect, he was defeated some times, but his win record outweighed his losses, and he always performed well when the losses happened. As the years passed, he also became the owner of the Crystal Kittens, token cards that are the offspring of Amethyst Cat and Topaz Tiger, and the ultimate Gem Beast card, the Rainbow Dragon. With those, his Gem Beast deck was complete.

Two and a half years after he and Juudai had met, he and Johan began to slowly realize something that had been building up between them. It was more than just a deep and good friendship: they were falling in love with one another. Johan realized this more quickly than Juudai did, and it fell to him to make the first moves. In the words of their friend Asuka, Juudai would have been sleeping with Johan for two years before it occured to him that any lovemaking had actually meant something.

Such first moves were indeed made, and Juudai responded, relieving a great deal of anxiety that Johan had scarcely been aware was there until it wasn't anymore. Their relationship blossomed even more from then on, both physically and emotionally, and it has strengthened to the point that both agree when Johan is knighted and freed of being a slave duelist, he and Juudai will become a team in the Pro Leagues.

At last, the time came for Johan's final duel as a slave duelist, versus the powerful and skilled Marufuji Ryou, known as the Kaiser for his awesome talent and domination of the Pro Leagues. But before Johan could step onto the dueling ring, he was taken away...
